Welcome to our blog post “10 Questions you need to ask before buying your Mattress & Best Mattress buying guide”

It’s Official!
Everyone needs a new Mattress at some times in their lives!

The questions are, why, when & where from?

We hope to provide some answers with our extensive review. I didn’t think just writing a review on the 10 best mattresses would suffice, so I have answered your questions and reviewed only the best mattress in each category for your information, so you don’t need to! So let’s start with the questions-

1.How often should I change my mattress?

According to sleep experts, you should buy a new mattress every 5-10 years, 8 years is recommended, but this really depends on a number of factors.

  • Is your mattress showing signs of wear & tear?

If you can see a visible dip in the middle of the mattress, or you can feel the springs poking against the inner lining of the mattress, then it’s definitely time to change. In my Insomnia journey I have repeatedly stated that an old mattress, with broken springs making my bedtime so uncomfortable, was one of the first problems of my sleep journey. And as sleep problems are usually a number of different problems, you will be much better off, changing your mattress now before it makes your life a misery.

  • Is your mattress a home for unwanted guests?

Dead skin cells, allergens, germs, dust mites & even bed bugs can find great comfort in an old worn mattress. You may well wash your sheets every week, but if your mattress is old & worn, it could still be harvesting unwanted guests. Check your mattress regularly for signs of bed bugs in particular. Look for brown stains on your bedding or mattress from bed bug faeces, or red dots from where a bed bug as been crushed by your body. If you do spot anything, it’s best to throw out the mattress, although you could try treating it.

  • Is your mattress keeping your partner awake?

If your mattress is ageing, it can lose support on one side in particular. This means you may well still have support, but your partner might not, so check their side of the bed. Check the springs & support on their side.

  • Is your mattress over 8 years old?

The Sleep Council recommend that you replace a mattress every eight years, because by this time, it will have lost much of its original comfort & support! So if your mattress is over eight years old, I suggest it’s time to think about changing your mattress.

2. What types of mattresses are there?

There are many different types of mattresses you could consider and people will have different reasons for buying different types of mattress. Here are some of the more popular types of mattress.

  • Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses contour your body which gives you additional support & comfort. So if you are a side sleeper, memory foam is a great choice.

  • Innerspring

Inner spring mattress

Or coil mattresses as they are sometimes called, use an internal support of metal springs. You can generally measure the quality of support from an Innerspring mattress by how many coils are in the design. This generally determines how well the mattress will conform to the body. All types of sleepers can be very comfortable on Innerspring mattresses. But they can become very uncomfortable if a spring breaks.

  • Water Bed

It’s quite obvious that Water bed mattresses use water, but they also use foam or fibers for additional support and to sometimes limit the waters movement. Your choice depends on the amount of support and flexibility you prefer and whether or not you find the movement of water distracting.

  • Air Bed

These use chambers filled with air as the primary support. The air chamber is padded with foam or fiber upholstery. It’s also adjustable, allowing you to adjust each side separately. Air beds are great for back sleepers and couples with different firmness needs. Some brands allow this facility.

  • Adjustable Bases

adjustable mattresses

These offer support wherever you need it as you can adjust the base to elevate your head, raise your feet, or provide more back support. They are perfect for targeting sleep related problems such as muscle aches, back pain, acid reflux, heartburn, sleep apnea, and more!

3. How firm should a mattress be?

This is a difficult question to answer as everyone is different. However, there is a firmness scale of 1-10 with the following typical ratings-

  • Soft                  is usually 3-4 out of 10 on the firmness side and usually have a sinkage of about 1.5 to 3 inches, best for side sleepers
  • Medium           5-6 out of 10 on the firmness scale & estimated that 80% of people have these type of mattresses, best for side, stomach & back sleepers
  • Firm                 7-8 out of ten on the firmness scale with less sinkage and hug, best for back sleepers

4. What different sizes of mattresses are there?

what size mattresses are there?

There are many different sizes of mattress, but in general they are as follows (all sizes in inches)

  • Twin        39 x 74                          Accommodates one child or one adult sleeper, but could be too short for taller adults
  • Twin XL   39 x 80                          Accommodates one child or one adult again, but with extra length so ideal for taller adults. Very common in dorms and guest bedrooms.
  • Full          54 x 74                          Also known as a double mattress, ideal for single adult who prefers lots of room
  • Queen     60 x 80                          Ideal for couples that prefer sleeping closer together
  • King         76 x 80                          Ideal for couples that need extra sleeping space
  • Cal King  72 x 84                          Can be used for adjustable beds and provides great length for maximum sleeping comfort

5. What’s the best mattresses for side sleepers?

We have already studied which sleep position is best in a previous post Which sleep position is best? But now we need to see which mattress is best for side sleepers. There are many types that offer great comfort & support for side sleepers, but we believe a side sleeper is better accommodated by a memory foam mattress. These offer the classic contouring & support that many side sleepers adore. I am myself a side sleeper and I can confirm that a memory foam mattress is easily the best mattress I have ever slept on. Of course, everyone is different and you may find memory foam not to your liking. I always suggest going to your local bed store and trying out a variety of options, then maybe buying off Amazon where it’s very likely to be cheaper!

6. What’s he best mattresses for back pain?

best mattress for back pain

Sleeping on the wrong mattress can worsen or cause lower . Lack of support from the mattress reinforces poor sleeping posture, strains muscles and doesn’t align the spine properly. all of which contribute to lower back pain

According to Jeffrey N Katz Professor of Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School

“A study conducted on 313 patients suffering from lower back pain, those using medium to firm mattresses reported less pain when lying in bed”,

so there we have it. Of course, life isn’t always as black & white as that, and again, I urge you to try our different types & firmness of mattress at your local store, as only you can say what is best for your back pain. As you may know, I have a memory foam mattress and I can say that when I did suffer with excruciating back pain back in 2014 I didn’t have a very comfortable time on my memory foam mattress. I would therefore assume I needed a firmer mattress then the memory foam could give me. If you can’t get out to test the mattresses locally, you can assume that Professor Katz and myself are both correct in our feelings that a medium to firm mattress is best for back pain sufferers!

7. Where is the best place to buy a mattress?

Now there’s a question! It’s all relative.

  • What is your budget
  • Do you want long-term guarantees
  • Do you want payment safety & security
  • Do you need quick delivery
  • What are the returns polices
  • What are the reviews like

In all honesty, I can’t see any reason to not buy from Amazon as they pretty much tick all the above boxes. You could try your local store, especially if you are testing out their mattresses, but unless they have a sale on, they aren’t likely to be cheaper than Amazon in my opinion. The one thing I always ask myself is “what if it all goes wrong?”. With Amazon, you know you will get your money back. Can you really say that about your local bed store?

8. What is a Box Spring?

what is a box spring

We have discussed mattresses in some length, but we need to just touch on this subject as it’s another important question as there’s not much point in buying a fantasticly comfortable mattress if your box spring isn’t any good. In the Uk this is referred to as a bed base.

A box spring provides a stable base for your mattress. Think of it as a platform to support your mattress and help distribute weight evenly. Without it, your mattress would gradually sag in different areas, creating a lumpy ugly mess. The box spring also adds height, so it’s easier to get in and out of your bed.

9. How often should I change my box spring?

You can expect about 8-10 years from an average box spring under average use, but signs that your box spring needs replacing are-

  • Your box spring has broken slats
  • Your box spring is sagging noticeably
  • Your box spring is squeaking under movement
  • Your box spring as steel coil springs over 10 years old
  • Your box spring has bent or broken steel grids

You often need to remove the dust cover from the bottom of your box spring to check the slats and other parts. Remove the staples that hold the cover in place to look inside. Use a staple gun to replace the cover if everything is fine.

It often makes sense to buy your box spring at the same time as your new mattress. Replacing them together helps you maximize the life of your new mattress.

10. Where can I buy a decent box spring?

Again, this is completely at you discretion. We recommend Amazon because of the simplicity and safety of your money, but we also recommend visiting your local bed store and trying out different box springs & mattresses. You can always buy on Amazon later at a pretty much guaranteed cheaper rate. Can you really trust your local store anyway? I wouldn’t!
